Both traditional oil and modern acrylic recipes are ground down by powerful granite or steel rollers. This process, through which very fine paints are obtained, has been used for almost 3 centuries and has given its name to the fine paints industry. Once the laboratory defines the production formula, colour production can begin The first step involves mixing together the ingredients of the paint recipe: pigments, binders and additives. This is called blending. An initial paste is obtained, containing lumps of pigment and dry particles which are not covered with binder. The paste is drawn over a North gauge to check the fineness of the paint. Acrylics are also traditionally ground. It is in fact only the pigment concentrate (concentrated syrup of slightly moist pigments) which goes through the manufacture process. The acrylic resin is later added under vacuum and by dispersion into mixers with a capacity of 300 to 4000 litres.
