Traditional Japanese Sumi Baren
£46.50Traditional Japanese "ba-ren" is the pressing and rubbing tool for printing. The inner coil or "shin" consists of flat strips of bamboo twisted together into strands and then into a long cord. The cord is then coiled onto a backing disk made from either layers of washi paper, carved wood or plastic. Finally a bamboo sheath or "takenokawa" is used as a covering, with rubbing surface for printing one side and a twisted handle for the artist to hold on the other. Over time the outer sheath may need replacing due to wear and friction of printing. Our "sumi" baren is made in the traditional way with a plastic backing disk and has a finer coil. It is 130mm across and is suitable for printing the "key block" and fine details. This baren comes in a presentation box. Replacement bamboo sheaths are available to order specially. Learn More -

Roberson Artists' Oil Colour 225 ml
Starting at: £38.60
Unlike other commercially available oil paints, Roberson Artists' Oil Colours do not contain any fillers, extenders or stabilisers. Each paint consists solely of high-quality pigment that has been ground into cold pressed linseed oil, resulting in a highly pigmented paint. This strength of colour presents the possibility of greater economy of use and a less homogenised texture between each tube, instead allowing the unique qualities of each individual pigment to reveal themselves. By limiting our range to 59 shades, we dispense with colours that can be easily mixed, creating a focussed palette of intense, lightfast paints that offer limitless combinations.

Gum Damar
Starting at: £10.00
Damar is a pale, almost colourless tree resin, which is soluble in turpentine, but not in alcohol or mineral spirits. It can be used as a varnish or as a glossy painting medium in conjunction with vegetable oils, and is generally preferable to other resin-based varnishes, such as mastic varnish, as it retains its colourless appearance for a longer period of time. In encaustic painting, the inclusion of damar resin imparts toughness and gloss to the paint surface. Learn More -

PG19
Cobalt Green is a synthetic pigment that consists of compounds of cobalt and zinc oxides. It is sometimes referred to as Rinman's Green, after the Swedish chemist who discovered it in the late-18th century. It is a permanent, opaque colour, with a weak tinting strength. Schmincke Horadam Gouache
Starting at: £9.35
Finest quality gouache paints, available in 48 shades, all of which are fully inter-mixable with the HORADAM® WATERCOLOUR range. Made following a traditional gum arabic recipe, they are naturally opaque, without the addition of white. They provide a luminous, velvet-matte finish, drying to a slightly lighter shade than when wet.
Schmincke recommends the following:
"The application possibilities of HORADAM® GOUACHE are extremely versatile. Although it can be heavily diluted, gouache is mainly intended to provide opaque application of colour. Opaque, in this case, means that it is not impasto, because impasto application tends to produce cracking, unless the percentage of binder is increased by adding gum arabic (50302). While watercolour painting work goes from light to dark (the white paper is the light), in gouache painting, any process can be used. While “back painting” of lights is limited in watercolour painting, when working in gouache (and other opaque colours), light values and lights can be added later using colours."

Roberson Liquid Metal 30ml
Starting at: £7.50

The Liquid Metal range does not tarnish and does not need to be varnished. All colours are intermixable and wash up with water. The Liquid Metal range does not tarnish and does not need to be varnished. All colours are intermixable and wash up with water. Coverage is approximately 7 square metres per litre. Two coats are required for most applications but if applied to walls or ceilings with a roller or a brush then three or four coats are recommended. Because of the highly reflective nature of the metallic paint when applying with a roller to a large area apply the paint evenly in long vertical strokes, finishing off the surface by rolling or brushing in one direction, i.e ceiling to floor. This will help to minimise overlapping and create a smooth and even finish. We recommend the use of a professional quality foam roller in order to achieve the best possible finish. When applying with a roller to a large area, apply the paint evenly in long vertical strokes. Finish off the surface by rolling one direction, i.e. ceiling to floor. This will help minimise overlapping and create a smooth, even finish. These paints can also be sprayed and this will produce the best and most consistent finish. To spray Liquid Metal Acrylics, you will need to use HVLP spray equipment with a 1.6mm or 1.8mm nozzle. To ensure proper flow, paint can be thinned with 25-30% water. Learn More -
Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel
Starting at: £6.80
Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel is manufactured by the American company Gamblin. They write:
"Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel is the only solvent-free painting medium that supports a broad range of painting techniques with minimal compromise. Solvent-Free Gel gives colours more flow and transparency, yet holds the shape of your brushmark. Solvent-Free Gel has a moderately fast drying rate and increases gloss. Made from safflower oil and alkyd resin, Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel is non-toxic and contains no Gamsol or petroleum distillates. In comparison to other solvent-free mediums, Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel supports the broadest range of painting techniques with the least compromise across color, dry time, texture and mark-making. To ensure proper drying of paint layers, Solvent-Free Gel should be used in moderation with oil colors. No more than 25% by volume. To avoid wrinkling, apply mixtures of Solvent-Free Gel and oil colors thinly. To paint solvent-free, we recommend Gamblin Safflower Oil for cleaning brushes while you are working. After your painting session, brushes can be further cleaned using Gamsol and/or soap and water."

Ivory Black Pigment
Starting at: £4.50
Ivory Black is a natural pigment of impure carbon, derived from charred animal bones. It is semi-transparent, very lightfast, and offers good tinting strength. It is a particularly slow-drying pigment, which forms a soft, rather brittle paint film in oil.
Compared to other blacks, such as Vine Black, Ivory Black possesses warmer, brownish undertones. It should not be used at full-strength in an underpainting, as subsequent layers are likely to crack. Otherwise, it is a very useful all-purpose black for many types of paint, excluding mortar, fresco or cement.
