The art of drawing with silver wire onto prepared paper or board. A new
silverpoint drawing is grey but in time will darken and turn brown. This
tarnishing effect gives silverpoint drawings their characteristic appearance.
The line is permanent and cannot be erased. Silverpoint is probably best
used on a smaller scale. Delicate cross hatching is slowly worked up until
the required depth of tone is obtained. Increasing hand pressure can help to
deepen the tone.

To prepare paper:
thin gouache to consistency of single cream and apply
with parallel strokes of a wide, flat brush. When the first coat is dry apply a
second with strokes at right angles to the first. Silverpoint can also be used for
under drawing on glue sized, gesso primed panels.
