Highly recommended for
calligraphers. This blue-black ink
is very similar to the original pine
inks of traditional Sumi production.
It works well in the lighter tonal
ranges and has a superb translucent
quality that develops with age.

This glossy red/brownish black
ink is traditionally used for
the writing of sutras, working
particularly well as a denser
liquid producing a very intense
black. The ingredients of this ink
are carefully selected to give it a
slightly oily quality. It is popular
amongst western calligraphers.

The finer the grain of the ink stone the finer the sumi produced (which also
affects the colour). A rougher stone would damage the ink molecules. It is
recommended to wash it out before and after use.
Preparing sumi ink
The grinding of the sumi ink has always been an
important part of the creative process. The artist
relaxes, concentrates on the work at hand and
forgets the cares of his or her everyday world.
The sumi stick must be ground lightly (too much
pressure will produce a rough ink) in a circular motion
on a smooth grinding stone with a few drops of water,
pushing the sumi into the well as it thickens and
pulling up more water to continue grinding until all the
sumi is thick. It is better to grind until the sumi is
concentrated and then dilute it as required rather
than grinding to a light colour. When holding the
stick during grinding it is good practice to wrap the
end in paper to stop oils from the fingers entering
the stick. After grinding, the sumi stick should be
wiped dry. These measures will prolong the life of
the sumi stick and stop it from cracking and break-
ing up.
It is recommended to only grind as much ink as you
need for the day as the animal glue in the ink may
turn rancid overnight. If the ink is too concentrated
it can also lose its delicate colouring. Always wash
the ink stone thoroughly after use in lukewarm
water.

The bottle should be kept in the fridge after opening to stop the bone glue
content from going rancid. This ink can last a long time if kept in the right
conditions. This ink is compatible with the sumi stick inks.

These coloured sumi inks create vivid shades that can be mixed and used with
the black sumi stick inks. It is recommended that they be ground using a white
grinding stone as opposed to the traditional grey stone.
