Gesso Panels

Our Gesso Icon Panels are handmade throughout the entire process, using hand tools rather than industrialised machinery.
Each board is made of lime, which has been allowed to age naturally for long term stability. Firstly, the panel is gently abraded to allow the penetration of rabbit skin glue into the fibres. Following the laying down of a specific canvas, the delicate process of building up precise layers of gesso is undertaken by hand. A final coat of water-based paint treated with wood preservative is applied and the finished panel lightly sanded, ready for painting.
Our smaller sizes will be restocked at the beginning of November: • 15 x 20 cm • 20 x 25 cm

Kozo paper is made from renewable branches of the kozo (paper mulberry) bush, specifically the innermost of three layers of bark which must be isolated to be cooked and beaten before the sheets are formed. Kozo fibre makes strong, translucent and absorbent papers. 46 gsm suitable for relief printing, Japanese woodcut and Chine-collé. Alumina Hydrate Light

Alumina Hydrate is an inert pigment with highly absorbent properties, which can be ground into oil paint as an almost colourless extender. It is often used as an additive in commercial oil paints, particularly in conjunction with transparent or lake pigments, as it provides stability and a homogenous consistency without effecting colour or gloss, although it may effect the pigment strength. Cornelissen Glass Mullers

Cornelissen Glass Mullers are handmade using superior boro silicate laboratory glass, which is 40% harder, more heat resistant, and offers better clarity than soda-lime glass. The base of each muller is ground perfectly flat, and sand-blasted to create a fine tooth to facilitate the grinding of pigments. The tall handle features an ergonomic top, to ease fatigue when grinding large amounts of pigment. Mullers act as flat-bottomed pestles, which are used to grind pigment into a binding medium, suspending it evenly to create a uniform covering of binder around each pigment particle. Using a muller and slab, rather than simply mixing pigment and binder together, will create a more homogenised and stable paint. Use in conjunction with a Cornelissen Glass Slab to make paint efficiently. The sand-blasted texture of the muller and plate helps to push and distribute the pigment throughout the binder quickly. This will mean less grinding, and more painting! Learn More -

Cobalt Green Light Pigment

Cobalt Green is a synthetic pigment that consists of compounds of cobalt and zinc oxides. It is sometimes referred to as Rinman's Green, after the Swedish chemist who discovered it in the late-18th century. It is a permanent, opaque colour, with a weak tinting strength. It dries quite quickly in oil, requiring a high oil content and forming a hard, fairly fleixible paint film. Cobalt Green is available in light and dark shades; the colour is determined by the amount of zinc oxide present.
