Chrome Yellow Light Pigment (PY34). Synthetic Inorganic pigment (Lead Chromate). Opaque. Good tinting strength. Lightfastness is good, but in some cases unstable as it can darken and turn greenish. Low oil absorption with fast drying rate. Recommended for oils not suitable for water-based mediums. Used since late 18th Century.

Alizarin Crimson Pigment

Alizarin Crimson is a synthetic organic pigment that became available in 1868. It requires a wetting agent to disperse, and in oil it also absorbs a lot of liquid and dries very slowly to form a hard, brittle paint film. It is chemically identical to madder-root pigments and should be protected against UV light where possible as it can fade when applied onto a white ground, although it is less fugitive than its natural counterpart. Alizarin Crimson is a very transparent pigment, with a high tinting strength and slightly blue undertone.

It can be watered down, and should always be shaken well before use. As with all handmade products derived from natural ingredients, there may be slight variations in the colour and consistency. Our Gesso Icon Panels are handmade throughout the entire process, using hand tools rather than industrialised machinery.
Each board is made of lime, which has been allowed to age naturally for long term stability. Firstly, the panel is gently abraded to allow the penetration of rabbit skin glue into the fibres. Following the laying down of a specific canvas, the delicate process of building up precise layers of gesso is undertaken by hand. A final coat of water-based paint treated with wood preservative is applied and the finished panel lightly sanded, ready for painting.

While watercolour painting work goes from light to dark (the white paper is the light), in gouache painting, any process can be used. While “back painting” of lights is limited in watercolour painting, when working in gouache (and other opaque colours), light values and lights can be added later using colours."
