To make silverpoint ground:
Place 20 grams of Bone White Pigment on a stone or glass slab and grind with water until very smooth. Allow the pigment to dry on a clean dish and then store dry either in a jar or wrapped in paper.
Combine enough liquid hide or parchment glue to make a paste on the slab. Grind the pigment and glue together until the paste is very smooth.
Place the paste into a pot and add enough glue so that the ground has the consistency of cream and then brush onto your paper.
Apprentices during the Renaissance would draw on a boxwood tablet coated with bone white pigment to practice the rudiments and foundations of drawing. Such a tablet is a re-useable surface which can be renewed by the application of water to the ground, making the drawing disappear.
