Unlike other commercially available oil paints, Roberson Artists' Oil Colours do not contain any fillers, extenders or stabilisers. Each paint consists solely of high-quality pigment that has been ground into cold pressed linseed oil, resulting in a highly pigmented paint. This strength of colour presents the possibility of greater economy of use and a less homogenised texture between each tube, instead allowing the unique qualities of each individual pigment to reveal themselves. By limiting our range to 59 shades, we dispense with colours that can be easily mixed, creating a focussed palette of intense, lightfast paints that offer limitless combinations.

Roberson Oil Primers

Roberson's Traditional Oil Primer is made in small batches using the highest quality materials. Can be used on canvas or wood. Two to three coats will produce a slippery surface to enable oil colour to be moved around. Canvas should be sized before oil primer is applied using Roberson's Prepared Rabin Skin Glue. Touch dry in approx. 6h. hard dry in 24h. Paint may set in tin, shake tin and stir well before use, dilute with white spirit if desired. It can impart luminosity, brilliance and gloss when used in mediums and varnishes, and as such it was highly valued during the Golden Age of painting in Venice. It is a slow-drying balsam, which can be diluted with turpentine or placed in a bath of warm water to aid flow.

Roberson Glass Mullers are handmade using high quality-glass.

Mullers act as flat-bottomed pestles, which are used to grind pigment into a binding medium, suspending it evenly to create a uniform covering of binder around each pigment particle. Using a muller and slab, rather than simply mixing pigment and binder together, will create a more homogenised and stable paint.

Roberson Glass Mullers are handmade using superior boro silicate laboratory glass, which is 40% harder, more heat resistant, and offers better clarity than soda-lime glass. The base of each muller is ground perfectly flat, and sand-blasted to create a fine tooth to facilitate the grinding of pigments.

Use in conjunction with a Cornelissen Glass Slab to make paint efficiently. The sand-blasted texture of the muller and plate helps to push and distribute the pigment throughout the binder quickly. This will mean less grinding, and more painting!
