Smalt is a kind of cobalt blue glass or frit, and its use as a pigment dates from the 1600s in the glass-making regions of Saxony. We offer two shades, light and dark, which are determined by the particle size of the pigment; the more finely ground the powder, the paler the colour. Before the introduction of Ultramarine Blue, Smalt was available in a wide variety of grades. It is a very transparent pigment, which is easily overwhelmed in mixtures due to its weak tinting strength. It works best in water based media. When ground in oil, it can become almost invisible in dried oil-paint films because its refractive index is so close to that of linseed oil.

This soft yellow ochre is sourced from near the ancient woodland of Epping Forest in North London. Given legal status by Henry ll as a Royal hunting ground for the Monarchy this forest has a rich cultural and geological history. This pigment is a fine particle size and is semi-opaque.

Traditional Japanese "ba-ren" is the pressing and rubbing tool for printing. The inner coil or "shin" consists of flat strips of bamboo twisted together into strands and then into a long cord. The cord is then coiled onto a backing disk made from either layers of washi paper, carved wood or plastic. Finally a bamboo sheath or "takenokawa" is used as a covering, with rubbing surface for printing one side and a twisted handle for the artist to hold on the other. Over time the outer sheath may need replacing due to wear and friction of printing. Our "sumi" baren is made in the traditional way with a plastic backing disk and has a finer coil. Beeswax is derived from melted honeycomb, and is available in two grades. Bleached Beeswax Pellets are white, having been bleached by the sun, and are an appropriate choice for using with pale colours, although they may revert to yellow over time. Natural Beeswax Pellets are yellow in colour, and offer a more flexible structure with a higher resin content. Beeswax has a melting point of 63-66°c, and may turn brown if over-heated. It is the most widely used wax in artists' materials, having a wide range of applications. Please see below for more details.

This unique colour is an intense orange oxide that is made from the decay of Victorian pipes mixing with the chalk bed of the infilled docks at Rotherhithe, in south east London. Rotherhithe has a long history as a port, with many shipyards from Elizabethan times until the early 20th century and with working docks until the 1970s, when they began to be infilled due to a decline in imports to Central London. With a fine particle size and transparent quality this pigment would be great for glazing techniques.

Formulated from the same dye that was used to colour blue and white china, this ink is a deep, rich blue. Used at full opacity, it is a blue-black, and dilutes down to wonderful cold blue washes. As it is dye-based, it is not fully lightfast. Learn More

Microcrystalline Wax is related to paraffin wax, and is used as a plasticiser in some recipes. It is characterised by the fineness of its crystals in contrast to the larger crystal of paraffin wax. It is generally more viscous, denser, tackier and more elastic than paraffin waxes, and has a higher melting point. Learn More

Gamboge is a natural tree resin, generally extracted by tapping of Garcinia trees, available as a powder and in the solid "pipe" form. One of the unique features of Pipe Gamboge is that it does not require a binding agent to be used as a paint. Instead, colour can be lifted with a wet brush, as from a watercolour pan. When used as a water colour, it gives a bright transparent golden yellow colour. It is highly transparent, fugitive to light, with a weak tinting strength. The powder can be dissolved in alcohol to colour resin-based varnishes. Gamboge was used from ancient times to dye the clothes and also to make a transparent yellow varnish for the colouring of wood, metals and leather.
