Carbon Black is an inorganic synthetic pigment, created by burning natural gases to form an almost pure carbon. It is semi-transparent, and in oil dries very slowly to a soft, brittle paint film. It requires a wetting agent, and can show in streaks, even when mixed with other colours.

Genuine Ivory Black is produced by burning reclaimed ivory, such as piano keys. These are antique, mainly Victorian pieces, using ivory with started out as hippo or walrus teeth, and offers a higher carbon content and greater tinting strength than modern-day equivalents, which are usually derived from animal bones. It is a particularly slow-drying pigment.

Small batches of ink are blended to give the required consistency and strength. Forge Lamp Black is a thick, smooth non-waterproof ink that has good permanence. It can be watered down, and should always be shaken well before use. As with all handmade products derived from natural ingredients, there may be slight variations in the colour and consistency. Ingredients: Soot, gum Arabic, and clove oil.
