This unique colour is an intense orange oxide that is made from the decay of Victorian pipes mixing with the chalk bed of the infilled docks at Rotherhithe, in south east London. Rotherhithe has a long history as a port, with many shipyards from Elizabethan times until the early 20th century and with working docks until the 1970s, when they began to be infilled due to a decline in imports to Central London. With a fine particle size and transparent quality this pigment would be great for glazing techniques.

The Kaweco Sport was first designed in 1911 as a pocket fountain pen which could be carried everywhere. It has an octagonal design and an oversized cap. Kaweco Sport fountain pens measure only 10.5 cm when closed, but when the cap is mounted on top of the barrel they become a 13 cm-long, standard-sized pen, hence the slogan: "small in the pocket, large in the hand". The Kaweco BRASS Sport fountain pen is made of solid, untreated, CNC-machined brass, which will age and develop its own unique patina over time unless polished. Traditional Japanese "ba-ren" is the pressing and rubbing tool for printing. The inner coil or "shin" consists of flat strips of bamboo twisted together into strands and then into a long cord. The cord is then coiled onto a backing disk made from either layers of washi paper, carved wood or plastic. Finally a bamboo sheath or "takenokawa" is used as a covering, with rubbing surface for printing one side and a twisted handle for the artist to hold on the other. Over time the outer sheath may need replacing due to wear and friction of printing. Our "sumi" baren is made in the traditional way with a plastic backing disk and has a finer coil. It is 130mm across and is suitable for printing the "key block" and fine details. This baren comes in a presentation box. Replacement bamboo sheaths are available to order specially. Learn More
