Formulated to the exact recipe used by Isaac Newton, this ink is completely permanant, as his surving writings attest. Although composed of very similar ingredients to our Jane Austen Ink, we consider Newton's recipe to be superior, as Austen's has browned slightly over time. Shell gold, so named because it was historically made and stored in a shallow shell such as a mussel shell, consists of finely powdered genuine gold mixed with a variety of gums. It is mixed with a bit of water and applied in the same way as watercolour. After drying for an hour or so, it can be burnished to a soft, beautiful lustre using an agate stone burnishing tool.

Beeswax is derived from melted honeycomb, and is available in two grades. Bleached Beeswax Pellets are white, having been bleached by the sun, and are an appropriate choice for using with pale colours, although they may revert to yellow over time. Natural Beeswax Pellets are yellow in colour, and offer a more flexible structure with a higher resin content. Beeswax has a melting point of 63-66°c, and may turn brown if over-heated. Gum Arabic is a resoluble binding agent, commonly used in the preparation of watercolours, but also useful as an adhesive, a size, and in the production of soft pastels. It is a natural product, harvested from the Acacia tree between October and May. The highest grade of Gum Arabic comes from the Kordofan region of Sudan. It is exceptionally pale and pure and therefore particularly suited to watercolour painting, while Nigerian Gum Arabic (while stocks last) is better suited to stone lithography and other printmaking techniques. Oak Gall Ink was originally used in monasteries and by the Crown in medieval Britain. Doomsday Ink initially lays down as a medium blue-grey, darkening to a rich, matte black, slightly warmer in tone than our other Oak Gall Inks. When diluted, beautiful warm red undertones are revealed due to the presence of wine within the mixture.

Parchment Clippings, usually waste goatskin vellum, were utilised throughout the Middle Ages to make an animal hide glue. This continued to be commonly used as a sizing for canvas before rabbit skin glue came to prominence in the nineteenth century. Parchment glue is comparable to isinglass glue, as it also produces a very pale, almost transparent glue with a degree of flexibility. Made from organic walnut husks collected in Cambridgeshire, this deep brown walnut ink is made to an 18th-century formula. Small batches of the ink are blended to give the required consistency and strength. It has good permanence, but will eventually fade if left in direct sunlight for sustained periods of time, and is not wholly waterproof, but has some staying power, especially on sized watercolour papers. As with all handmade products derived from natural ingredients, there may be slight variations in the colour and consistency as a result of seasonal changes.
