Parchment Clippings, usually waste goatskin vellum, were utilised throughout the Middle Ages to make an animal hide glue. This continued to be commonly used as a sizing for canvas before rabbit skin glue came to prominence in the nineteenth century. Parchment glue is comparable to isinglass glue, as it also produces a very pale, almost transparent glue with a degree of flexibility. Made from organic walnut husks collected in Cambridgeshire, this deep brown walnut ink is made to an 18th-century formula. Small batches of the ink are blended to give the required consistency and strength. It has good permanence, but will eventually fade if left in direct sunlight for sustained periods of time, and is not wholly waterproof, but has some staying power, especially on sized watercolour papers. As with all handmade products derived from natural ingredients, there may be slight variations in the colour and consistency as a result of seasonal changes.

Gamboge is a natural tree resin, generally extracted by tapping of Garcinia trees, available as a powder and in the solid "pipe" form. One of the unique features of Pipe Gamboge is that it does not require a binding agent to be used as a paint. Instead, colour can be lifted with a wet brush, as from a watercolour pan. When used as a water colour, it gives a bright transparent golden yellow colour. It is highly transparent, fugitive to light, with a weak tinting strength. The powder can be dissolved in alcohol to colour resin-based varnishes. Gamboge was used from ancient times to dye the clothes and also to make a transparent yellow varnish for the colouring of wood, metals and leather.

Smalt is a kind of cobalt blue glass or frit, and its use as a pigment dates from the 1600s in the glass-making regions of Saxony. We offer two shades, light and dark, which are determined by the particle size of the pigment; the more finely ground the powder, the paler the colour. Before the introduction of Ultramarine Blue, Smalt was available in a wide variety of grades. It is a very transparent pigment, which is easily overwhelmed in mixtures due to its weak tinting strength. It works best in water based media. When ground in oil, it can become almost invisible in dried oil-paint films because its refractive index is so close to that of linseed oil.

Traditional Japanese "ba-ren" is the pressing and rubbing tool for printing. The inner coil or "shin" consists of flat strips of bamboo twisted together into strands and then into a long cord. The cord is then coiled onto a backing disk made from either layers of washi paper, carved wood or plastic. Finally a bamboo sheath or "takenokawa" is used as a covering, with rubbing surface for printing one side and a twisted handle for the artist to hold on the other. Over time the outer sheath may need replacing due to wear and friction of printing. Our "sumi" baren is made in the traditional way with a plastic backing disk and has a finer coil.
